Last night, we went to see The Illusionist with Tara and Jay.
I figured out how the movie would end very early on, but it was still enjoyable to watch. The cinematography was annoying at times with much of the film looking as if it had been shot with a lomo camera with a sepia filter and vaseline selectively smudged on parts of the lens. It added a fairy-tale feel to the film that I am not sure was needed. It would have been a much stronger film, I think, had it been shot without these hyper-stylizations. Still, overall a good flick. Paul Giamatti is an amazing actor. Everyone else is really good. I give it 7 thumbs up.
Aside: Since Ed Norton’s character’s name is Eisenheimer, I kept thinking to myself throughout the film whenever he did something particularly amazing or said something witty, that some other character was about to stand up and exclaim, “What does this guy think he’s some kind of Weisenheimer?!” Totally silly joke that distracted me endlessly from the film and was entirely antithetical to the mood of the film, but which nevertheless continued to echo through the cavernous recesses of my mind. Also, everything in the film seemed much more Russian than Austrian to me. I have no idea why.
