So, yesterday, Kristin and I made the trek to the Elizabeth, NJ IKEA store, looking for some deals. We bought a four drawer kitchen piece on casters to replace the rickety little stand that came with Misha’s cage. Misha is our pet parrot whose cage sits in the corner of our dining room, just outside the small kitchen and across from the window looking out the front of the apartment building. Not only is the piece of furniture more attractive than the little cage stand, but it also is more useful, as we can move some of the bits and pieces which are over-crowding our overly small kitchen into the drawers. As an added bonus for Misha, his cage now sits about 6 inches higher than it did, so his little flock-minded brain thinks that he has been promoted in the family structure. Birds tend to define their ‘pecking order’ by whomever has the honor of roosting the highest. This also means that whenever Misha acts up, we say “You’re grounded, Misha!” and we put him down on the ground where he waddles around and, being humbled by such a quick demotion, becomes very quiet and docile.
Also, we spent $0.99 on one of those plastic Ikea bags to help us carry the various small items we purchased (including a pillow, a tissue box, a new toilet seat, and a pack of 100 little votive candles) out to the car. I originally thought it a waste of money, but it turns out that that oversized blue plastic bag makes a very effective laundry bag.
We also picked up some literature on their different kitchen systems, as our cabinets are a bit worn and in need of replacement, but as it is a small kitchen and we won’t be living in this one bedroom for too many more years before migrating to a larger space, we really only want to spend Ikea prices on renovating the kitchen.
