Sorry there were no posts yesterday, but thanks to the
evil doings of a little program called mlmac, I spent most of my day
troubleshooting the new Powerbook. I ended up having to wipe
everything clean and restore from a Carbon Copy Cloner backup.
Evidently, mlmac stores the files it is in the process of
downloading in your /user/library/application support/mlmac/
folder and the rather large size of this folder caused the finder
to freeze at start-up trying to load the user prefs and led to
file corruption across the user folder. So, users of mlmac
beware: don’t pause large downloads to shut down so you can
install your brand new 512MB chip! For a while, I thought the
memory was bad. Took a while to find the source of the problem,
and by the time I did, some of the other troubleshooting measures
I had been through had rendered my user folder pretty far from
stable. I think if I ever use mlmac again, I will make an
entirely separate user just for downloading with it. The good side of
this is that in doing the reinstall, I went ahead and partitioned the HD
on the Powerbook in half, so I now have a nice 18GB chunk of space for a
scratch disk for Final Cut Express and Photoshop that I can erase every
so often to keep everythin nice and healthy. That, and I am now running
640MB on this bad little mamma-jamma!
