This is an amazing step-by-step guide to binding your own books that I spotted via MAKE. It’s meticulous and looks to make a very nice and professionally bound book.
However, if you are looking for a quick and dirty approach, I know one: I once bound my own book by leaving and extra 1/2″ of space on one end of the paper (takes some extra preparation in laying out the pages in InDesign or Quark) and then using a lot of hot glue at that end of the stack of papers with some pretty thick card stock bent around as a cover. It’s quick and works. The book I made like that still holds together after a good 5 years of use as a diary.
