According to this post:
Sony has announced that the US version of the PSP firmware 2.0 will be patching the USA this August 12th. Sony recommends that if you have an American PSP with the Japanese 2.0 firmware to change to this one because the Japanese software on an American PSP is said to void your warranty.
From all appearances, the firmwares feature identical feature sets and are probably identical in every way except for the game start up screen (the Japanese game start up screen says Playstation Portable under the PSP when everything flashes white, which I don’t think was the case with the 1.5 US version; wait, I have one of both, let me check…correct; this screen is different). In any case, it doesn’t matter, as they indicate that you can install the U.S. 2.0 firmware over the Japanese 2.0 firmware.
So, if you’ve been wanting to upgrade, but have been holding off, go ahead. Just remember to update again on August 12th, and between then and now, make sure you don’t break your PSP.
