I am a horrible father to my parrot, Misha. At least today I was. I was typing away on the computer when he fell off his cage and flew to the ground. I laughed, said “Oh, Misha, did you fall off?” He started waddling around on the floor, and I thought “I’ll get him in a minute.” He likes waddling around the floor and falls off his cage all the time, so no harm in all this.

The problem is that I was so wrapped up in what I was writing that I totally forgot about him. Then, I realized it was time to go downstairs to get the laundry and start folding it. So I did. I came back up stairs with all the laundry and walked into the apartment to an empty cage. It was then that I remembered he had fallen.

I’m looking around all over, saying “MISHA! MISHA!” worried out of my mind, but then I run into the bathroom and there he is just sort of peaking up at me with that quizzical “what am I doing down here” look in his eye. I had to have left him on the floor for a good thirty minutes. He’s been very quite ever since, and I can tell that he was scared. I feel bad about it. I made some popcorn, just so I could treat him to some.

When did I become such a negligent bird dad?
