I’m working on a detailed
review of the 12″ Powerbook,
but for now here’s the short of it:
The keyboard is the best thing I have ever typed on. Feels very solid with good kickback, and no stuck
keys. The keys are nicely recessed as a laptop’s keys should be, but the color and shape provides a natural
shading that visually seperates each key nicely from the others. Yes, it gets very warm near the left wrist
rest, where the harddrive is located, but it only gets really warm when you are performing
hard drive intensive tasks (like verifying/repairing permissions, compressing video, etc), and it
isn’t much warmer than my old 500mhz iBook used to get. Airport Extreme is nice and fast with good range
on this machine. Even at 801.11b, communicating with my G4 Tower, the powerbook is able to use the music
folder on that machine as the default location of the iTunes music folder without missing a beat
(literally) and continuing to access the internet at nice speeds. Even though this machine has the same
speed chip as my G4 tower and much much less RAM, I managed to rip an entire DVD to DiVx in 5 hours, as
opposed to my normal 10-12 on the other machine. Pretty sweet. Overall: Damn fine machine. Check
out the full review when I have it up for all the nitty gritty details…
