That little sucker looks really nice and small and
ultra-portable. After playing around with iChat A/V and my Canon Elura DV
camcorder last night, I found myself lusting after this small little
wonder for my webcam. It’s teenie and plugs right in. No tripod set up,
no bulky battery pack or AC adapter. Just sleeky tiny and nice. But…
and here is my big question about this $150 webcam: Does it only
work with iChat AV? The requirements blurb says “Requires iChat AV
Software (not included), Mac OS X v.10.2.5 or later, 600MHz G3 processor
or higher, Broadband Internet connection.” Does that “requires” mean
“requires for all the functionality described on this page” or does it
mean “only works if you are using iChat AV”? If this, like most 3rd party
webcams is capable of working with other programs to capture still
pictures or for stop-motion animation, or whatever someone wants to hack
it together to do, then I want it, and I will go buy it this week. But if
it is limited to only working with iChat AV . . . well, then I still sort
of want it, but I think it should only cost about $35 if that is the case
and it should also come bundled with the program (which it for some
unknown reason does not). Word. UPDATE: I’m calling Apple now to ask them about
this, as there is no
mention of the iSight working without iChat AV on their website. Ideally, they should
make it work with both
iMovie and iPhoto as a low-end, on the fly picture-taking solution. Right now I am on
hold . . . Guy answered,
couldn’t answer my question and has switched me over to tech support . . . on hold again
. . . “We’re sorry your
call was unable to be completed. Please hang-up and try the toll free number again.”
wtf?! I guess I will try
again later and update as appropriate… 2nd UPDATE: Calling again; on hold. Someone is directing me
for a pre-sales technical info. . . . I think she just forwarded me back to the Apple Store . . . grrrr . . .
This salesman says that it only works with iChat AV. HUGE MISTAKE ON APPLE’S PART!
